Winter bass fishing can be a humbling experience, and the latest Eswatini Bass Club competition at Tubungu Dam proved exactly that.
Held on 18 July under clear winter skies, 21 anglers gathered at the club’s beautiful waterside venue for a day of friendly competition, good company, and the challenge of convincing winter bass to bite. While the weather was perfect, the fishing was anything but easy.
A Beautiful Winter’s Day on the Water
Tubungu Dam looked spectacular as competitors launched their boats and prepared for a full day of fishing. The water was clear, conditions were calm, and expectations were high.
Winter bass, however, had other ideas. Many anglers found the fishing exceptionally tough, with bites few and far between. The larger fish in particular seemed reluctant to feed, forcing competitors to dig deep into their tackle boxes and rely on experience rather than luck.
Despite the difficult conditions, the determination and enthusiasm of Eswatini Bass Club members never wavered.
Every Fish Had to Be Earned
When bass fishing becomes difficult, versatility becomes vital. Anglers experimented with a wide range of techniques throughout the day in an effort to unlock the winning pattern:
- Slow presentations: Crucial for enticing reluctant, cold-water bass into striking.
- Texas-rigged ribbon-tail worms: Accounted for several key fish brought to the scale.
- Ned rigs: Proved highly effective for picking up subtle bites along deeper structures.
The clear water and winter temperatures meant anglers had to fish methodically and pay close attention to detail. While catches were limited, every fish represented a well-earned success. The biggest fish of the day fell just short of the 1kg mark, highlighting just how challenging the conditions were.
More Than Just a Competition at the Eswatini Bass Club
One of the things that makes the Eswatini Bass Club special is that club competitions are about much more than simply catching fish. Yes, there is healthy competition and plenty of friendly rivalry, but the social side of the club remains equally important.
During the lunch break, members gathered to celebrate a fellow angler’s birthday, sharing chocolate cake and stories from the morning session. Moments like these are what make club fishing so rewarding.
Whether you’re a seasoned tournament angler or new to the sport, the club offers an environment where members can learn from each other, improve their skills, and enjoy the outdoors together.
A Venue Worth Visiting
The Eswatini Bass Club is fortunate to have one of the most picturesque club venues in the country. Situated right on the water’s edge, the clubhouse overlooks Tubungu Dam and provides an ideal setting for both anglers and visitors alike.
The facility is not only used for fishing events. Community groups, families, and businesses can also book the venue for functions, celebrations, team-building events, and private gatherings.
