Largemouth bass is the one of the most popular freshwater sport fish in Southern Africa. Introduced in the late 1800s, bass have thrived in our dams and reservoirs and are now found in virtually every province. They are aggressive, hard-fighting, and accessible — perfect for beginner and experienced anglers alike.
Understanding Largemouth Bass in SA
The largemouth bass is an ambush predator. It sits in or near cover and attacks prey that comes within range. Bass are most active in water temperatures between 16 and 26 degrees Celsius — typically from late August through to April, with October and November being the peak of spawning season. Essential Gear for the Beginner Bass Angler
Rod and Reel
Start with a medium-heavy spinning rod in the 6 to 7-foot range. A quality spinning reel in the 2500 to 3500 size, loaded with 10-15lb fluorocarbon or monofilament, will handle most situations a beginner will encounter.
Lures
For beginners, a small selection of quality soft plastic lures covers far more ground than a tackle box full of mediocre hard baits. Start with a stick bait, a swimbait, and a creature bait in two or three colour variations.
The Best Times to Fish for Bass in SA
Early morning: The golden hour. Bass are most active in the first two hours after sunrise.
Late afternoon: The second feeding window as the light fades.
Spring (Sep-Nov): Spawning season — bass move shallow and are aggressive.
After rain: A light rain oxygenates the water and triggers feeding.
Where to Find Bass in a Dam
Rocky points that extend into the dam. Weed edges and grass lines in 1-3 metres of water. Boat docks and jetties. Submerged trees and timber. Drop-offs where shallow flats fall into deeper water.
Beginner Mistakes to Avoid
Setting the hook too early — wait until you feel the weight of the fish. Fishing too fast — soft plastics work best fished slowly and methodically. Ignoring the wind — baitfish and bass stack up on windward banks. Fishing in one spot — move regularly until you find active fish.
